Construction update 2/29/08

The Clarion University Office of Finance and Administration has provided an update on the major construction projects underway at Clarion University.

Campbell Parking Lot

Payne Street has not been closed to traffic because demolition has not begun yet. The actual demolition of Campbell Hall originally scheduled to begin on February 11 was delayed due to additional asbestos being found in a section of the building. This was not included in the original scope of work. The delivery of the crane used in the demolition process, which is being transported from Boston, has also been postponed.

The crane is transported in sections and special permitting is required for it to travel on the highways. This makes it a little more difficult to reschedule. At this time the removal of the additional asbestos is nearing completion and the process of establishing a new date to begin the demolition process of Campbell is underway. When the schedule for the delivery of the crane and the start of demolition is determined the campus community will be notified.

Dining Hall Roadway

Despite the weather, the construction crew lifted and installed the first of the steel roof trusses Thursday and Friday. Sporadic, brief delays in the area of the Carrier Building should be expected as workers continue to install other rooftop supports. Soon thereafter, beginning during the semester break, traffic will be restricted on that roadway to one-lane as workers start block and brick construction on the building.

Science-Technology Building

Contractors for the science-technology building continue delays in the construction process. The Department of General Services (DGS) who manages this construction project is now negotiating with the contractors to mitigate future delays and revise the completion and move-in schedule. When this revised schedule is finalized by DGS, it will be shared with the campus community.

Becht Hall Replacement

Representatives of NEXT Architecture met with the group doing preliminary planning for the new Student Success Center for Becht Hall. The group considered initial ideas for the building and conveyed their needs for each of the offices and plans for coordination of services. At the end of the spring semester NEXT Architecture will produce a feasibility study incorporating these concepts. At the next meeting, Tuesday, March 25, participants will begin to consider flowcharts of critical processes and their implications for the facility.
