Persaud to speak about "The Art of Autism"

Asha Persuad

Asha Persuad will present a lecture, "The Art of Autism," April 15 at 7 p.m. in Level A of Carlson Library at Clarion University.

Persaud’s lecture accompanies an exhibit of art created by autistic adults and children, on exhibit in Level A of Carlson Library, April 4-15. The exhibit and the lecture are free and open to the public.

Persaud earned dual bachelor degrees from Penn State University and received her M.S. in school psychology from Duquesne University. She is currently pursuing board certification in behavior analysis. She is the director of autism services for the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School.

She is the research coordinator for the Center of Excellence for Autism Research at the University of Pittsburgh. She previously served as regional director of autism research for Family Behavioral Resources and has trained extensively in diagnostic assessments and behavioral interventions.

Her goal is to create a center of excellence for children with autism, in an effort to bridge the gap between the nationally recognized research being performed on autism and the high demand for better and more effective treatment for children with autism in the Pittsburgh area. The Hope Learning Center, LLC will offer such services as diagnostic assessments, speech, occupational, and physical therapy, social skills groups, parent support groups, summer camps, and a therapeutic equine program.

The Hope Learning Center is also planning on developing a technical school, which will specialize in the education of students with Asperger’s and high functioning autism, allowing them to explore and become proficient in their area of interest. The center is slated to open in the spring of 2008.
