Clarion presents undergraduate research awards

Eleven Clarion University students were awarded $4,813 in Undergraduate Research Awards during the Spring 2008 round of funding.

The funds, provided by the Clarion University Office of the Provost, support student research projects. Students could apply for up to $500 in funds to support independent research or a scholarly project to be conducted in collaboration with a faculty mentor.

Students receiving funding:

Marian Barber, $500 to attend Southern Graphics Council Printmaking Conference. Faculty advisor, Mark Franchino, art. Barber, a sophomore art major, is a daughter of James and Carolyn Barber of Littlestown and is a graduate of Delone Catholic High School.

Amanda Delach, $500 to attend the National Council on Education for the Ceramics Arts. Faculty advisor, Gary Greenberg, art. Delach, a sophomore elementary education major, is a daughter of Jeff and Laura Delach of Canonsburg and is a graduate of Canon-McMillan High School.

Jessica Geissler, $500 for the project, Identifying Cis-Acting Transcriptional Elements Involved in the Regulation of ADD66 During Times of Er Stress. Faculty advisor, Dr. Craig Scott, biology. Geissler, a senior molecular biology and biotechnology major, is a daughter of Jill Geissler of Portersville and is a graduate of Lincoln High School.

Deonna Soergel, $500 for the project, Stalking Schistosomiasis. Faculty advisor, Dr. Andrew Turner, biology. Soergel, a sophomore biology major, is a daughter of Reed and Danetta Soergel of Evans City and is a graduate of Butler Area High School.

Haley White, $500 for the project, Biochemical Analysis of ADD66 and Hac1p Affinity. Faculty advisor, Dr. Craig Scott, biology. White, a sophomore biology major, is a daughter of Mary White of Morrisdale and is a graduate of West Branch Area High School.

Bryan Doverspike, $490 for the project, Augmentation of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Growth in Cultures in the Absence of Stromal Cells Inside Rotary Cell Culture Vessels. Faculty advisor, Dr. Douglas Smith, biology. Doverspike, a sophomore biology major, is a son of Kevin Doverspike of New Bethlehem and is a graduate of Redbank Valley High School.

Levi Miller, $313 for the project, Genetic Analysis of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria Isolated from the Clarion River. Faculty advisor, Dr. William Barnes, biology. Miller, a sophomore molecular biology and biotechnology major from Coopersburg, is a graduate of Southern Lehigh High School.

Kristopher Snyder, $240 to attend Economic Freedom and Human Development. Faculty advisor, Dr. Sandra Trejos, economics. Snyder, a junior economics major, is a son of Jane Snyder of Clover and is a graduate of Blackhawk High School.

Linda Carbaugh, $270 for the project, The Law of the Sear: Geographical and Economic Implications. Faculty advisor, Dr. Sandra Trejos, economics. Carbaugh, a senior real estate major, is a daughter of Norma Gaw of Kennerdell and is a graduate of Cranberry High School.

MaryJo Clark, $500 for the project, A Radio Map of Interstellar Clouds. Faculty advisor, Dr. Sharon Montgomery, physics. Clark, a senior psychology major, is a daughter of Herbert and JoAnn Clark of Boyers and is a graduate of Moniteau High School.

Corin Rombach, $500 for the project, At the Bubble’s Edge: Distances to Interstellar Clouds. Faculty advisor, Dr. Sharon Montgomery, physics. Rombach, a senior psychology major, is a daughter of David and Karen Rombach of Prattsburgh, N.Y., is a graduate of Prattsburgh Central High School.
