Paraprofessional workshops scheduled in four locations

Clarion University’s Center for Teaching Excellence will be offering a paraprofessional workshop series, “Helping Instructional Assistants to Become ‘Highly Qualified’, at four locations. Classes will be offered at Clarion University, July 23-29; Clarion University – Venango Campus in Oil City, June 23-27; New Castle Learning Center, July 14-18; and Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit #5 in Edinboro July 7-11.

The Clarion University Paraeducator Workshop Series is designed to assist teaching aides in all settings to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to carry out their responsibilities in a competent manner. The program, developed in collaboration with Riverview Intermediate Unit, and the Cranberry, DuBois, Punxsutawney, Redbank Valley, and Titusville school districts, has been updated to include a full day of instruction on special education topics relevant to today’s classrooms.

The registration fee is $350 per person. Registration information including name, address, home phone number, e-mail address, and school district of employment, along with a check made payable to the Center for Teaching Excellence should be sent by June 30 to Center for Teaching Excellence, Attention Wenda Strickenberger, Clarion University, 219 Stevens Hall, 840 Wood St., Clarion, Pa. 16214. A confirmation letter will be sent along with a registration packet.

Registration fees refunds of 75 percent will be made up until two weeks prior to the beginning of the series. No refunds will be made after that point.

Those completing the workshop series will receive a certificate designating them as a “highly qualified” paraeducator, which is a mandated requirement for many aide positions in the public schools.

The series has been delivered by Clarion University’s Center for Teaching Excellence for the past five years. The presenters are experts in their field and included practicing professors, teachers, administrators, and supervisors. The series includes four, full-day workshops, and concludes with an assessment on the fifth day.

The workshop topics and lecturers are: Dr. John Reagle, “Roles and Responsibilities”; Diann Monoskey, “Mathematics”; Kathy Zimmerman, “Child Development”; Mary Wolf, “Writing Skills”; Shari Wynkoop, “Special Education”; Dr. Debbie Ellermeyer, “Reading Skills”; and Dr. Laurie Taylor, “Behavior Management.”
