35th Minority Recognition Dinner held

Students of the year and scholarship excellence were recognized during Clarion University’s 35th Annual Minority Student Recognition Dinner sponsored by the office of Minority Student Services.

The Minority Student Recognition Dinner recognizes students for their achievements in the academic, leadership, athletic and service areas. The banquet organizers hope to encourage and inspire other minority students to perform to their fullest potential.

Guest speaker Kimberly S. Reed is a managing partner for Reed Consulting Group, which specializes in the development and implementation of internal/external professional development programs, retention programs, talent demand planning, strategic staffing, diversity recruitment training and leadership development for Fortune 500, global financial services and professional services organizations.

She received her B.A. degree in political science with a concentration in international relations from West Chester University. She is a guest lecturer at Temple University, teaching human resources courses and business workshops/seminars while working toward her master’s and Ph.D. in human resources; an instructor at Sharon Bible Institute; and co-host on “Mike Robinson Presents,” a Comcast TV broadcast.

Minority students, nominated by faculty and staff, were recognized in the following major categories:

Outstanding Service, Angie Woods. Woods, a junior speech communication major, is a daughter of Star Banks of Pittsburgh and is a graduate of Westinghouse High School.

Outstanding Leadership, Cheyenne Patterson. Patterson, a senior mass media arts, journalism, and communication studies major, is a daughter of Cecilia Patterson of Pittsburgh and is a graduate of Schenley High School.

Outstanding Achievement, Rozlynd Vares. Vares a senior economics major, is a daughter of James Vares of Kaneohe, Hawaii, and is a graduate of Kamehameha High School.

Freshman of The Year, Denzil Dennison. Denison, a freshman information systems major, is a son of Matthew Dennison of Ruther Glen, Va., and is a graduate of Caroline High School.

Student of The Year, Mariah Yancey. Yancey, a junior English/Spanish major, is a daughter of Robyn Yancey of Harrisburg and the late Melville Yancey Jr., and is a graduate of Susquehanna Township High School.

Athlete of The Year, Demetrius Graham. Graham, a senior liberal studies major, is a son of Patricia Graham of Detroit, Mich., and is a graduate of Henry Ford High School.

Graduate Student of The Year, Amil Cook. Cook is seeking a degree in education and is a son of Sally Cook of Randolph, Md.

Daniel P. Roberts Award, presented to the top senior with highest grade point average, Nicole Rollins. Rollins, a senior biology major, is a daughter of Homer Rollins of Kennerdell and is a graduate of Allegheny-Clarion Valley High School.

Receiving W.E.B. DuBois Awards for a cumulate grade point average of 3.5 or above were Cook, Rollins, Vares and :

James Caldwell, a sophomore political science major, a son of Karen Caldwell of Harrisburg and a graduate of Harrisburg High School.

Natalie Cannon, a senior elementary education major, a daughter of Vanessa Cannon of Monroeville and a graduate of Gateway High School.

John Confer, a junior information systems major, a grandson of John and Margaret Confer of Kane and a graduate of Kane High School.

Jessica Du, a junior elementary education/early childhood major, a daughter of Deborah Grumski of Hermitage and a graduate of Hickory High School.

Stephanie Estok, a junior liberal studies major, a daughter of Steve Estok of Fairview and a graduate of Fairview High School.

Kathleen Foreman, a graduate student seeking a degree in English, a daughter of Diana Williams of Philadelphia and Andre Foreman of Philadelphia, and a graduate of Philadelphia High School for Girls.

Ronald Frances, a senior accounting major, a son of John Frances of Clarion and a graduate of Clarion-Limestone High School.

Ashley Kosis, a senior special education/early childhood education major, a daughter of Wade Kosis of Monaca and a graduate of Center High School.

Angela Lawrence, a senior marketing major, a daughter of Annette Lawrence of Valencia and a graduate of Mars High School.

Adrienne Levy, a sophomore sociology/philosophy major, is a daughter of Elma Levy of New Bethlehem and a graduate of Redbank Valley High School.

Shanti Mehra, a junior art major, a daughter of Janice Carter of Clayton and a graduate of Northern High School.

Jenifer Poblete, a junior mass media arts, journalism and communication studies major, a daughter of Mark and Sue Poblete of Muncy and a graduate of Muncy High School.

Khalid Qureshi, a graduate student seeking a degree in education, a son of Mohammed Qureshi of Mechanicsburg, and a graduate of Cumberland Valley High School.

Kelsey Schroyer, a senior mass media arts, journalism and communication studies major, a son of Mark Schroyer of South Park and a graduate of South Park High School.

Megan Sheaffer, a senior marketing major, a daughter of Don Sheaffer of West Leechburg and a graduate of Leechburg Area High School.

Caitlin Vancas, a sophomore marketing major, a daughter of Michael Vancas of Elizabeth and a graduate of Elizabeth Forward High School.

Noni Vidal, a graduate student seeking a degree in library sciences, who resides in Ithaca, N.Y., with her husband, Franck.

Andrew Welliver, a graduate student seeking an M.B.A. degree, a son of Robert Welliver of Williamsport and a graduate of Loyalsock Township High School.

Kevin Wilbur, a junior secondary education/social studies major, a son of David Wilbur of Doylestown and a graduate of Central Buck High School West.

Jacquelyn Yarzebinski, a senior biology major, a daughter of Joseph and Adela Yarzebinski of Wampum and a graduate of Lincoln High School.

Thirty-one students received the Black Student Union Departmental Award. They are nominated by a particular department for their service, academics and/or leadership.

One hundred and nineteen students received the Exceptional Achievement Award for obtaining a 3.0 grade point average during a semester.
