Muth receives national scholarship

Clarion University student Katelynn Muth is the recipient of an endowed $5,000 scholarship from the national Phi Eta Sigma Freshman Honor Society. This is the first time that a Clarion University student has received this scholarship.

Muth, a senior mathematics major with a minor in economics, is a daughter of Larry and Kathie Muth of Ridgway, and is a graduate of Ridgway High School. She is currently serving as senior advisor for the Clarion University Chapter of Phi Eta Sigma and volunteers each week as a tutor for elementary and high school students.

John Sagabiel, grand secretary-treasurer for Phi Eta Sigma, reported that a record number of students applied for the Society’s various scholarships and awards. Seventy students were selected to receive scholarships or awards from the Society’s $250,000 endowment.

Muth was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma in Spring 2006 and currently serves as the organization’s senior advisor, having served as treasurer in 2006-07. She participates in the Phi Eta Sigma volunteer tutoring program for local high school students. She is also a member of the Clarion University Honors Program.

The oldest and largest freshman honor society, Phi Eta Sigma was founded at the University of Illinois on March 22, 1923. Phi Eta Sigma has 353 chapters throughout the United States, and more than 900,000 members. Phi Eta Sigma was voted membership into the Association of College Honor Societies in 1937. Only three societies have had longer continuous membership.
