CULTURAL DIVERSITY WEEK IN CLARION

Clarion University and the Clarion community are sponsoring the fifth annual “Cultural Diversity Week,” Sept. 27-Oct. 1, coinciding with the Autumn Leaf Festival.

Clarion University and the Clarion community are sponsoring the fifth annual “Cultural Diversity Week,” Sept. 27-Oct. 1, coinciding with the Autumn Leaf Festival. The theme this year is “An Autumn Mardi Gras.” All of the cultural and musical programs are scheduled in front of the Clarion County Courthouse. This is a joint cultural event planned by Clarion University and the community and is free and open to the public. Contributing sponsors are Beverly Healthcare Clarion and Beneficial Finance.

The week’s events include:

Sept. 27 - Opening events, 6:30-9:30 p.m. Dr. Jocelind Gant, Clarion University assistant to the president for social equity, and Clarion Borough Mayor Robert Yoho will give the official welcome. The program includes: Clarion University’s Lift Every Voice Choir gospel choir; Dr. Richard Strasser from the Clarion University music department playing classical guitar music; the Clarion-Limestone Sensations; Jackie Booth of Clarion performing Native American music; Linda Rose of Clarion demonstrating Irish step dancing; Clarion University students Greg Bostick, Sana Heath-El, and Stephanie Brooks dancing to “Big Bad Voodoo Daddy”; •Clarion University student Evan Elliot on bagpipe; Clarion University students Angelo Anderson, Brad Writh, and Zeferino Albino singing a cappella; Clarion University’s international students from Cyprus demonstrating traditional Greek dancing; a fashion show by the Clarion University International Association; and Runa Kuna from Ecuador performing Latin America traditional music.

Sept. 28 - Ambridge High School Steel Drum Ensemble, 7-9 p.m.

Sept. 29 - Runa Kuna traditional Latin America music, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Sept. 30 - The Dixie Lion Jazz Band from State College playing Dixieland and swing standards, 7-9 p.m.

Oct. 1 - Grand Bon Rien from Pittsburgh will play Cajun music; Banjo Man Jim Haner from Williamsport; Clarion University students Danielle Garman and Martin Savolskis will demonstrate tap dancing; and Runa Kuna from Ecuador performing Latin American traditional music, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.. These groups will perform along Main Street throughout the day.
